Skin cancer is a common disease these days, which unfortunately affects millions of people every year. Even worse, many people who suffer from skin cancer never even saw it coming, because they didn’t know what the signs of skin cancer are. This type of cancer usually develops in areas that get a lot of sun every day, like your face, scalp, neck, ears, lips, chest, hands, arms, and for women, on the legs. However, that’s not the only place that it can show up. It can also form on the areas that hardly see any light at all, such as your palms, in the spaces between your toes, under the fingernails or toenails, and the genital area.
Skin cancer occurs in people of all skin tones, including those who have darker complexions. When it happens in such people, it usually happens in the places that are not exposed to as much sun. Here are some of the symptoms of the most common types of skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma usually happens in the above-mentioned places of the body that see lots of sun every day. It can appear as a pearly or waxy bump, or also as a flat, flesh-colored or brown lesion that looks like a scar.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the type of cancer that also shows up on places that get lots of sunlight. It appears as a firm, red nodule, or also as a flat lesion with a scaly, crusted-over surface.

Melanoma is one of the most well-known types of skin cancer, and it can develop anywhere on the body, but it is particularly common on the trunk, neck or head of affected men. For women, it can develop on the lower part of the legs. For both men and women, it can also occur in areas that don’t get as much exposure to the sun, and it can happen to people of any skin tone. For those with darker skin, as mentioned above, it usually shows up on the palms or soles of the feet, or under the fingernails or toenails. Melanoma can show up as:
- A large, brown spot with darker speckles
- A small lesion with an unusual border and certain parts that appear red, blue, white, or blue-black
- A mole that changes color, size, or feel, or which bleeds
- Dark lesions on the palms, soles, fingertips or toes, or on mucous membranes in the mouth or nose
Less common types of skin cancer include kaposi sarcoma, which usually occurs in people with weaker immune systems. It develops in the blood vessels of the skin, and it causes purple or red patches on the skin or mucous membrances. Merkel cell carcinoma is another type of less common skin cancer, which can show up as nodules on or beneath the skin.
